In Räpina municipality of Põlva County, an accident happened on Sunday, where a six-year-old boy hit the rails and was hit by an approaching passenger train. When the ambulance arrived, the child was conscious and according to current data, his condition is not life-threatening.
At 2 p.m. Estonian time, the alarm center received a message that a boy who had been hit by an approaching passenger train stepped on the train tracks between Holvand and Ruusa train stops in Räpina municipality. The driver whistled and applied the emergency brake, but unfortunately the collision could not be avoided.
Baldur Pilden, chief operating officer of the Southern Prefecture (Lõuna prefektuur), described it is difficult for emergency vehicles to reach the complicated area, which was the reason why emergency workers walked to the scene for several kilometers to provide first aid to the child on the spot.
It was then decided to put the child on the train and drive back to Ruusa stop, where he could be handed over to the doctors and taken to the hospital. The child was conscious after the accident and it is currently known that his condition is not life-threatening.
"According to preliminary data, the child walked alone from the home yard and without the knowledge of his parents and unexpectedly stepped on the tracks when he left the woods, where he was hit by an approaching passenger train," the police chief of operations noted.
There were few people on the train, they were not injured in the accident. All the details of what happened are being clarified.
