Viru Õlu to stop brewing in Haljala
AS Viru Õlu, the third-largest beer producer in Estonia, will stop producing brewed beers in Estonia due to years of losses.
Sören Jensen, CFO of Viru Õlu, a member of the board of the Danish stock exchange Harboe Group, admitted to Postimees (link in Estonian) that since the Estonian business had been in deficit for years, it had to be reorganized, which means moving beer production to other Harboe units in Germany and Denmark.
As far as Postimees knows, there will be a sales team in Estonia who will continue to market Harboe products, such as Pure juices, as well as the production of lemonades and other beverages in Estonia.
The brewery located in Haljala was known in Estonia primarily for Puls beers and ciders, and they also produced Saunaõlu (Sauna beer) and Mecklenburger.
At the end of March, Viru Õlu employed 51 people, and the company's market share in the Estonian beer market was estimated at two percent.
