Ornithological Society seeking help tracking white stork nest sites
The Estonian Ornithological Society (EOÜ) is calling on people to note and report the locations of white stork nests via a web application on its homepage. A white stork census was most recently conducted in Estonia six years ago.
Contributors entering information at www.eoy.ee/valgetoonekurg (link in Estonian) should first check whether a specific nest has already been added to the database, which can be done either via a map or the application's full list of nests.
The EOÜ noted that one should be precise when entering the location of a new nest, as a difference of even just a couple dozen meters between a nest's entered and actual locations may be enough cause for confusion.
For example, if one populated area is the site of several stork nests and their precise locations have not been accurately recorded, it would not be possible to update previously entered information or find a specific nest's information later.
Location data for already entered nests cannot be changed, however data regarding a given nest can be expanded as needed.
The first census of white stork nests in Estonia was conducted in 1939, in the course of which 320 nesting pairs of white storks were registered. The country's white stork population has been monitored on a regular basis since 1954.
The most recent thorough census of white storks in Estonia, part of an international census, took place in 2014.
