Face detection, automatic control gates to be installed on Estonian border
Face recognition technology and automated gates will be added to Estonia's borders if two ongoing procurements are successful.
The face recognition technology will be used to compare people with the pan-European database and will be mainly for people entering Estonia from outside of the European Union.
Romet Saaliste, Head of the Border Services Department of the Information Technology and Development Center of the Ministry of the Interior, said: "The whole point of this is actually to make the process more secure."
The new border control gates automatically check the person's face and the identity document. Saaliste believes this will make it faster for EU citizens to cross the border.
"Certainly, as far as the citizen of the European Union is concerned, this border crossing will be easier. These automatic gates will provide a faster flow and capacity, but when it comes to issuing decision support, the border controller [will make the decision], there is no change for the person there. "
It is not yet known when the new border control solutions, which are already used in other countries, will be introduced.
