Estonian-registered car injures seven in Berlin incident
A car bearing an Estonian license plate ploughed into crowds in Berlin Sunday morning, leaving seven people injured, some of them seriously, German international public broadcaster Deutsche Welle (DW) reports.
The incident took place in the Charlottenburg district of the German capital, close by the Bahnhof Zoo metro station, shortly after 7 a.m. local time Sunday, with authorities saying some of the pedestrians who were struck by the vehicle sustained serious injuries, requiring the use of a rescue helicopter, DW said.
One of the injured was reportedly trapped under the vehicle following the incident.
The driver, a 24-year-old, has been taken into custody, and a manslaughter investigation is now open, though reports say there is no evidence that the incident was sparked by religious or political motives, with police saying the driver was likely speeding and lost control while turning left.
The vehicle was a Mercedes with an Estonian license plate, it is reported.
The site is close to where 11 were killed just before Christmas 2016, when a radical islamist steered a truck into a Christmas market.
