Berlin driver who injured 7 in Estonian-registered car is Kosovo national
The driver of a car which struck pedestrians in Berlin Sunday morning, injuring seven, was a Kosovar national, driving a vehicle which bore Estonian license plates. The driver was mildly intoxicated, daily Postimees reports.
Berlin police spokesperson Martin Helweg told Postimees (link in Estonian) that the driver was a 24-year-old from Kosovo, who holds a German residence permit and a registered permanent residence outside of the capital.
The incident took place in the Charlottenburg district of the German capital, close by the Bahnhof Zoo metro station, shortly after 7 a.m. local time Sunday, with authorities saying some of the pedestrians who were struck by the vehicle, a Mercedes SUV, sustained serious injuries, requiring the use of a rescue helicopter, German international public broadcaster Deutsche Welle reported.
One of the injured was reportedly trapped under the vehicle following the incident.
Further details of the circumstances of the incident are to be determined.
The driver was arrested at the scene Sunday and criminal proceedings are underway
