As the number of people in Hiiu island is increasing exponentially in the summer, Hiiumaa Municipality was known to be the first Estonian local government to sell prepaid household garbage bags to guests almost three weeks ago.

"Aktuaalne kaamera" (AK) reported the bag costs €1.7 and the price includes a garbage handling fee and the bag indicates all the places where it can be handed over on the island.

Special containers have been set up for rubbish, where only municipal waste in a prepaid bag can be left.

About 600 bags have been already sold in the first weeks and according to the representative of the local government, the influence of the use of the bag is growing.

Omar Jõpiselg, mayor of Käina municipality in Hiiu County, said: "The container is already half full and I feel that two-thirds of it would have ended up in the packaging containers two months ago, which means it is actually working and people get used to it. when we look at the packaging, the quality has already become cleaner."
