79 sports cars and 22 luxury cars sold in Estonia in 2020
Sales of luxury and sports cars in Estonia has remained stable over the last few years, and this year's coronavirus pandemic has not so far brought forth much change.
As of July this year, 79 sports cars and 22 luxury cars had been sold; the numbers for 2019 were 69 and 42, respectively. Car dealers are not reporting a remarkable change in sales this year.
Arno Sillat, CEO of the Estonian Association of Car Sales and Service Companies' (AMTEL), said the particular sector is not affected much by economic highs and lows.
Sillat explained: "Going well, someone else is probably doing even better. The cars are still being purchased, someone still has the money for it."
Sillat noted that sales of regular cars did drop in March: "Before all, or rather as a ratio, sales dropped regarding company cars. Companies were more cautious and froze their purchases. Not so much for individual persons."
According to data from the Road Administration (Maanteeamet), the registration of sports and luxury cars has decreased by 35 percent and the registration of brand new sports and luxury cars has dropped by 42 percent.
Road Administration's traffic director Meelis Telliskivi said sales of such cars has been in an upward trend the last few years.
Telliskivi said: "We looked at the upper part of our data, meaning cars that are very exclusive. Bringing out examples, there has been one McLaren registered this year. And then cars we know from movies - Aston Martins and the like. There are quite a few of these exclusive vehicles brought to Estonia."
Jussi Pärnpuu, chairman of the board at car dealership Auto 100, said Estonians are conscious buyers and acquire the cars out of a love for high technology.
Pärnpuu said: "It's good for me to compare with neighboring land - Latvia, Lithuania. Purchases are made there for appearance and prestige, but Estonian buyers, buyers of sports and luxury cars, are conscious and are after details and the best in the world.
"The average owner of a sports or luxury car in Estonia is an average Estonian entrepreneur and more regular than we can imagine."
