Estonia to Purchase Javelin Anti-Tank Missiles
Negotiations have been launched for the purchase of third-generation US-built Javelin anti-tank missile systems.
The procurement is part of the 2013 to 2022 national defense development plan, which calls for reinforcing the Defense Forces' anti-tank capabilities.
Defense Minister Sven Mikser said the purchase would be one of the main priorities of the development plan, adding that the price and equipment meet Estonian requirements.
Commander in Chief of the Defense Forces, Maj. Gen. Riho Terras, said the system is very efficient and battle-tested, adding that the Cabinet's decision also highlights the good relationship between the two countries.
The missiles can be fired from semi-enclosed areas such as buildings and shelters, and lock on to the target before launch, allowing soldiers more mobility on the battlefield.
The ministry did not reveal the cost or number of the systems. The Defense Forces are also planning a tender to purchase 44 barely-used CV9035 combat vehicles and could buy mobile artillery.
