Health Board: 20 new coronavirus cases, 13 of them in Ida-Viru County
Twenty new cases of coronavirus have been detected in Estonia over the past 24 hours, the Health Board (Terviseamet) says, 13 of these in Ida Viru County.
The Health Board says a total of 1,116 primary coronavirus tests were conducted over the 24-hour period, with 20 testing positive (1.8 percent positive rate); Estonia's incidence rate per 100,000 residents over the past 14 days stands at 13.5.
Estonia's own ceiling, imposed by the foreign ministry, beyond which individuals entering the country from abroad should generally self-quarantine for two weeks, is 16 cases per 100,000.
Thirteen cases came in Ida-Viru County, scene of the most recent localized outbreak, centred on a bar in the town of Jõhvi and related to miners working at a nearby oil shale mine. Four new cases were found in Harju County, one in Lääne-Viru County and one in Tartu County. One case did not have a place of residence entered in the population register, whose data is used in compiling locations of new COVID-19 cases.
Four of the new cases in Ida-Viru are employees of the Estonia mine. Three cases are close contacts with of the former, and the remaining two cases are connected to travel and contracting the virus from a close contact returning from abroad.
Two of the four Harju County cases picked up the illness via close contact with a carrier; the origins of the two remaining cases are still to be uncovered.
Harju County saw seven new cases in the previous 24-hour period (August 27-28), which two have been found to be related to travel within the EU and three the result of close contact with an infected person; the source of the remaining two cases is still unknown, the Health Board says.
The source of the Tartu County new cases is also still to be determined.
Ida-Viru County outbreak update
Fifty-two cases of coronavirus have been linked to the Estonia mine so far, along with two more infected miners who recently attended the Jõhvi Kelder bar, passing it on to close contacts. For this reason the two miners are counted as part of the Jõhvi Kelder component of the outbreak, rather than the Estonia mine section.
The Jõhvi Kelder bar coroanvirus case count is currently 15, including the two miners noted above.
Hospitalization and recovery rate update
Three people have been discharged from hospital in the past 24 hours, and zero admitted.
No new deaths have been reported related to the virus in the past 24 hours; the current death toll from COVID-19-related causes stands at 64, with the last of these reported on August 23.
The number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 has fallen by three; as of Saturday morning, nine people in Estonia required hospital treatment due to COVID-19, none of them are on assisted breathing.
The Health Board's eastern regional department is monitoring a total of 650 people relating to coronavirus, 94 of whom are sick.
As of Saturday, 409 cases of coronavirus in 396 individuals have been wrapped up (some individuals have more than one case associated with them).
The Health Board says 2,086 people have recovered from coronavirus, 1,581 have had their case terminated by a medical professional, and the remaining 505 meet the triple criteria of not having tested positive for COVID_19 in the past 28 days, not being currently hospitalized for reasons relating to the virus, and not awaiting confirmation of recovery.
147,237 primary tests have been conducted in Estonia since the end of January, with 2,363 (1.6 percent) testing positive.
