Anett Kontaveit advances to third round of US Open
Top Estonian tennis player Anett Kontaveit reached the round of 32 in the US Open after defeating Slovenian Kaja Juvan (WTA 113th) in straight sets, 6:4, 6:1.
Kontaveit started the match well, breaking the 19-year old Juvan's serve and taking a 3:0 lead in the opening set. Juvan was able to rally however and equalized the set at 3:3.
Kontaveit broke once more in the eighth game of the first set, but could not close out the set after four set points. The young Slovenian fought back well in the tenth game, but Kontaveit was able to wrap up the 45-minute first set 6:4.
The second set belonged to the Estonian, as she was able to break all of Juvan's serves. Kontaveit opened a 4:0 lead in the second set and after dropping one to Juvan, the Estonian closed out the set, taking an overall 2:0 (6:4, 6:1) victory and advancing to the round of 32 at the Billie Jean King International Tennis Center in New York.
Kontaveit will face off against Polish player Magda Linette, currently ranked 24th in the world singles rankings, in round three. Linette reached the round of 32 after a nearly three-hour long battle with Danko Kovinic (WTA 92nd), which the Pole was able to close out at 2:1 [6:1, 6:7(2), 7:6(4)].
Kontaveit and Linette have met before on six occasions, with the 28-year old Linette taking four of the matches. It has been a long time however; Kontaveit's two victories came in 2014, and in the last match-up in Wuhan, in 2017.
