Studies to Dismantle Last of Paldiski's Nuclear Legacy Approved
The government today released 2.1 million euros to fund studies into dismantling nuclear infrastructure left by the Soviet Union.
The studies are needed to begin removing the structures, which is planned to begin in 2040. The current storage facilities were built between 1995 and 2013. Information about the number of containers containing radioactive materials is scarce as Soviet troops took most of the documents with them when leaving in 1994.
According to the Ministry of the Environment, the studies will show how much, what type and how radioactive the waste from the dismantling of the structures will be.
The Soviet Union build a nuclear submarine training center in Paldiski, just west from Tallinn, in 1960, with the nuclear reactors being shut down only in 1989.
