Russian Border Crossers Resist Arrest
Over the weekend, border guards on the Narva River detained two fishermen whose Russian-registered boat crossed over onto the Estonian side. Unusually for such cases, the fishermen resisted arrest and attempted to flee to the Russian side.
At 12:20 on Saturday, the guards at Vasknarva station, which is at the river's source on the north shore of Lake Peipsi, received a report that a fishing boat with Russian Federation registration markings was on the Estonian side of the river, uudised.err.ee reported.
"On three occasions," according to the news report, the men used a knife to cut the rope by which their vessel was being towed by the border guard speedboat. No explanation was offered as to why the men's knife was not taken away the first time.
The men were taken to Jõhvi jail and charged with resisting arrest and an illegal border crossing.
"On the Narva River, the temporary border line is marked with special buoys with a short distance between them and the border is very visible. There are relatively few accidental illegal border crossings. Resistance to border guards is encountered extremely rarely," said a police and border guard spokesperson.
