Estonian MEP: Greeks forget how much EU taxpayers have given them ({{commentsTotal}})

MEP Kaja Kallas said that Greeks blame the Germans for stealing their money, but ignore how much EU has helped them.

Kallas told Vikerraadio's program "Uudis+" that the European Parliament is discussing all angles of the situation with Greece and is considering all possible scenarios. She said the Greeks themselves are behaving rather arrogantly and most of the MEPs find it upsetting.

"Naturally we all see things in our own way. But if we owed so much money to others and had received so much from them, we would keep quiet and try to be as polite as possible and get along with everybody, to ensure a best possible solution. They, however, have a different disposition. Their stance is that you owe us, our people are suffering, you have done us injustice. They ignore the fact that other nations suffer too," Kallas said.

She added that solidarity has always been one of EU's principles. The member states have tried their best to be understanding with Greece.

"Their anger is mostly directed at the Germans, who they say have hurt them, and that the Nazis stole their money. They pay no attention to the fact that they have received so much from the EU, or the taxpayers of the EU, as well as the guarantees, the low interest rates, loans with no interest at all, not to mention the private sector," she said.

German chancellor Angela Merkel has nevertheless made it clear that Germany will not back down on its demands and Greece has to abide to the repayment program or leave the euro-zone, said political analyst Ahto Lobjakas.

He added that people should refrain from reading too much into the mini-trade-offs that Germany has made so far. "They're not so much the sharp edge of the wedge, but attempts to buy a few more days, weeks or two weeks to consider all possible options," he said.
