TUT Council confirm Aaviksoo appointment
A veto on the appointment of Jaak Aaviksoo as the next rector of Tallinn University of Technology did not receive the necessary number of votes for a veto and Aaviksoo will soon be named as the university's new head.
The vote was the last obstacle, after Aaviksoo passed the Board of Governors vote at the end of May, although only by one vote, and even that vote was late contested with four members saying they did not vote for Aaviksoo, who received 8 votes from 11. The four later refused DNA, fingerprint and handwriting forensic tests.
The TUT Council vote was also close for Aaviksoo, with 25 members, from 41, voting against him and only 14 supporting the former IRL government minister and rival University of Tartu rector. 28 votes against would have been needed for a veto.
“How the vote panned out shows the university currently has real problems. But the council is composed of 41 members. If the entire teaching facility would have been asked, the result would have been considerably different. A considerable part of TUT backs Aaviksoo,” council head Andres Keevallik told ERR.
Sandor Liive, the head of the Board of Governors, said the board will convene in the next few days to finalize Aaviksoo's appointment.
