Ligi: Paperless education by 2020
The Ministry of Education is to spend 40 million euros in digitizing studying in schools by 2020.
The money will be spent on developing studying software in Estonian and crossing over to a completely digitized exam system.
Education Minister Jürgen Ligi said that schools have until now focused on e-infrastructure, but the focus will now shift towards quality e-studying possibilities.
Already this year, an e-school web portal will open, allowing students to find and use materials from a number of sources, and it will allow teachers to compile materials and send them to children. Teachers will receive training on how to use the portal.
Laido Valdvee, an IT teacher, said the program will allow for a more individual-based teaching system, where the individual needs and abilities are taken into consideration.
“Using technology will make learning more interesting for pupils and new materials will be accepted easier,” he said, adding teachers' lives will also become easier as they can combine literature from text books with free information on the Internet.
