Estonia comes away empty-handed from world championships in athletics
Gerd Kanter, Estonia's only hope for a medal at IAAF World Championships in Beijing, finished fourth in Saturday's discus final.
Kanter, a former Olympic champion, had collected one gold, two silvers and two bronzes from world championships over the past 10 years.
The competition was won by Kanter's old rival Piotr Malachovski (67.40 meters), in front of Belgium's new national record holder Philip Milanov (66.90) and Robert Urbanek (65.18). Kanter lost the bronze with 36 centimeters, having thrown 64.85 meters in round one.
The rest of the Estonian team put on an average display, with Maicel Uibo 10th in decathlon, Risto Mätas 12th in men's javelin and Rasmus Mägi and Tanel Laanmäe 13th in 400 meters hurdles and javelin respectively.
Kenya made history by being the first African country to top the IAAF world championships medal table with seven gold, six silver and three bronze medals. Although the US had two medals more in total, their six each score left them third behind Jamaica, which also boasted seven golds, most of them from sprints.
