Kaljurand, Lavrov talk Kohver, border treaty, cooperation
Estonian and Russian foreign ministers met in New York earlier this morning.
Marina Kaljurand, the Estonian FM, and Sergey Lavrov, her Russian counterpart, discussed the border treaty ratification process. Kaljurand said the Estonian government will soon hand the treaty bill to Parliament, with Lavrov confirming the same.
The treaty was signed by the foreign ministers of the two nations in February, 2014, but will need to be ratified by both Parliaments before taking effect.
Other topics on the table included other bilateral treaties and relations between the two countries, including holding political consultations between the two foreign ministries to debate European security and other international subjects.
EU sanctions against Russia were also talked about.
Kaljurand said she is happy that the Eston Kohver-saga was put to rest, adding that the kidnapping in the first place was deplorable. She said it was the first thing she told Lavrov, adding that despite the ordeal being over, one can not pretend it never happened.
“The atmosphere was very professional. Two foreign ministers talked about all topics on the table – the agreeable and the not so agreeable,” Kaljurand said.
