Poll: Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand would be most popular presidential candidate
A new poll shows that Estonians would like to see current Minister of Foreign Affairs Marina Kaljurand elected President this year. The poll also included other potential candidates, Center Party leader Edgar Savisaar and former EU commissioner Siim Kallas among them.
Eesti Päevaleht wrote on Monday that 23% of Estonians would like to see Kaljurand as their next president.
Kaljurand told Päevaleht that she took the result as a great acknowledgment of her work. “But it’s also a responsibility to live up to this trust, and an obligation to perform my tasks as well as I can,” she was quoted saying.
Kaljurand did very well in the poll both as the first and second choice of respondents. With strong support of the Russian-speaking minority, Center Party leader Edgar Savisaar made it to 14%.
MEP Indrek Tarand, who in the past managed to win a large share of the protest vote and remains a favourite of the voters disillusioned with the political parties, got 9%, closely followed by former EU Commissioner for Transport Siim Kallas.
A number of other names came up, former President Arnold Rüütel among them. Of all those asked, 21% stated they didn’t have a first choice for president, and 35% didn’t have a second choice.
