Nordica extends Copenhagen-Örebro route to Groningen
Nordica is extending its Copenhagen-Örebro service to Groningen in the Netherlands to make better use of its aircraft. The company is also looking for similar opportunities elsewhere and is currently in negotiations with three airports.
Nordica became the operator of the Copenhagen-Örebro service after winning a public tender.
Sven Kukemelk, Nordica’s chief of business development, said the company wanted to use its aircraft more efficiently during the four hours it would otherwise spend on the ground due to the Copenhagen-Örebro flight schedule, and that it had now found a partner in the Dutch municipality of Groningen.
Kukemelk said that the agreement concluded was effectively a win-win situation for all the parties involved: Groningen, Copenhagen, and Nordica alike.
“It enables us first and foremost to cut the cost base and make significantly better use of existing aircraft. It’s also good for our partners,” he said, adding that even under the new schedule there would be a period around lunchtime when aircraft would stand idle. “We are looking for ways to fill that gap as well and to find a use for our aircraft. We are also on the lookout for similar routes.”
Kukemelk pointed out that routes like this worked well for Nordica since they weren’t taking any commercial risks outside of Tallinn. “We are interested in subcontracting flights elsewhere in Europe as well,” Kukemelk said.
Nordica will serve the Copenhagen-Groningen route with the same plane and personnel leased from BMI it uses to operate the Copenhagen-Örebro route.
