Kersti Kaljulaid registered as presidential candidate ahead of Monday elections
On Sunday, the National Electoral Committee registered Kersti Kaljulaid as an official presidential candidate in the first round of elections, which is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Monday. Kaljulaid was formally nominated on Friday with the signatures of 90 MPs.
Kaljulaid has the full support of the Reform Party, Social Democratic Party (SDE), Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL) and Free Party Parliamentary Groups, likewise that of 23 members of the Center Party Parliamentary Group. The Conservative People's Party of Estonia (EKRE) did not support Kaljulaid's candidacy as they do not agree with her globalistic worldviews, reported ETV's news broadcast "Aktuaalne kaamera."
If Kaljulaid is unsuccessful in earning the votes of at least 68 votes in the first round of elections on Monday, a second round will be scheduled for Tuesday.
"Everything will continue as at the end of August," explained Priit Vinkel, director of the Elections Department of the Chancellery of the Riigikogu. "We will continue with the nomination of candidates for the second round on Tuesday morning from 8-10 a.m. and, following that, a third round, if the president fails to be elected in the second round. And if the president fails to be elected with the votes of at least 68 MPs in the third round, then we will again be heading to the electoral college."
