Lithuanian Railways CEO says has signed Rail Baltic deal
CEO of Lithuanian state railways Lietuvos Gelezinkeliai, Stasys Dailydka, said on Saturday that he had signed Rail Baltic’s procurement agreement on Friday evening after receiving the go-ahead from members of the state railway company’s management board.
Latvia and Estonia signed the Rail Baltic deal earlier this week.
“The management board members gave the necessary approvals, and I have already signed it,” Stasys Dailydka told BNS on Saturday.
According to Dailydka, the signing of the agreement on Friday was not related to an announcement that the European Commission might suspend funding for the entire Rail Baltic project.
The supervisory board of RB Rail, the Baltic joint venture set up to coordinate the railway project, approved the Rail Baltic procurement agreement at the end of September.
Rail Baltic will build a fast European-gauge railway connection from the Estonian capital Tallinn to the Lithuanian-Polish border. The planned top speed of trains is 240 km/h for passenger trains, and 120 km/h for freight trains.
The Baltic states stand to receive €442.2m euros for the project from the European Union by 2020.
