Russian embassy displeased with ETV newscast
The Russian embassy in Tallinn has expressed displeasure with a news story of ETV's “Aktuaalne Kaamera” newscast. In the story, the head of the Baltic Center for Russian Studies, Vladimir Yushkin, spoke about hybrid threats.
The Russian embassy said on its Facebook page that the story aired on Oct. 28, in which experts voiced the opinion that a hybrid operation was being prepared in Estonia, was a piece of anti-Russian propaganda.
They referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s statement that claims of a Russian military threat were “unthinkable, foolish, and completely unrealistic”. The embassy stated that security was “much too serious a question to be used in self-serving ways”, especially in the “current difficult times” where there was “less and less certainty in the world”.
Yushkin said on the news program that a hybrid war would begin with an internal intervention rather than external aggression. In his words, internal unrest would be the first phase of the conflict. “In this phase, so-called civilian army groups will be formed in the country against which a hybrid war is planned,” he said.
According to Yushkin, five groups would be involved: A group for information operations, one for taking over power, opposition parties, entrepreneurs, and strike forces. In his words, thus far only one kind of group - the one that spreads the Kremlin’s views in different languages - could be noticed in Estonia, while the others remained concealed.
