Ferry Leiger expected to enter service Dec. 12
Leiger, the first of the four brand new ferries to be delivered to TS Laevad, the ferry-operating subsidiary of the Estonian state-owned Port of Tallinn, is due to enter service on the route connecting the island of Hiiumaa with the mainland on Dec. 12, reported regional paper Hiiu Leht.
Sirle Arro, director of the Marketing and Communication Department at Port of Tallinn, said that while the company expects the Leiger to begin operation on Dec. 12, they cannot be absolutely sure that this will happen as the ferry, currently en route from Turkey's Sefine Shipyard to Estonia will likely continue to shelter from storm in port in Portimão, Portugal, through Saturday.
She said that the older ferries Harilaid and Kõrgelaid, which will be serving the Rohuküla-Heltermaa route from Dec. 1-12, can continue serving the route after Dec. 12 as well.
The route is currently operated by the Regula and St. Ola.
Meanwhile, the sea trials of the ferry Tõll are being conducted off the Polish coast 24 hours per day and are estimated to continue for another five days. During these sea trials, a total of 26 different tests on systems will be conducted.
Leiger began its journey from the Turkish shipyard where it was built on Nov. 5. Earlier this week, the ferry departed Gibraltar for Lisbon but had to turn back on Thursday to take refuge from storm in Portimão.
