Tartu County Court found a Jõgeva police officer guilty of abuse of power and sentenced him to a suspended prison term.
The court sentenced Sergei Vesnuhov, 37, to a one year and six month suspended prison term and one year and six months of probation, Tartu courts spokesperson Krista Tamm told ERR’s online news portal.
The Tartu County Court upheld the victim’s civil suit against the officer and ordered Vesnuhov to pay the former 875 euros in material damages and 3,000 euros in non-patrimonial damages.
Vesnuhov must also pay 716 euros in procedural costs as well as pay the victim 4,140 to cover the cost of legal fees incurred.
According to the charges, Jõgeva Police Department patrol officer Sergei Vesnuhov and his colleague inspected the passengers of a vehicle they had stopped on the Tartu-Jõgeva-Aravete Highway in Jõgeva County.
According to the charges, one of the passengers was drunk and Vesnuhov decided to take the passenger in to sober up, and used undue force against the man, as a result of which the latter sustained bodily injury.
The parties involved have seven days in which to appeal the court’s decision, should either side wish to do so. If the decision is appealed, the court will announce their motivated comprehensive decision on Dec. 28.
