Starman, Elisa introduce 10G-EPON super-fast network
Network providers Starman and Elisa have introduced a next-generation 10G fiber-optic network and in cooperation with Nokia will start offering a super-fast Internet connection based on the 10 Gbit/s Ethernet Passive Optical Network standard (10G-EPON).
Starman’s technical director, Jaanus Erlemann, said on Wednesday that a network with this kind of connection speed could come in handy for people working in video processing who want to upload and download images and video. According to Erlemann, the companies rather thought about future network requirements setting up the new connection, which they expect to arise in three to five years.
“Virtual reality goggles are coming out that are connected to different other services, these are the kinds of places where the new network will be needed,” Erlemann said.
Increased capacity and the need for faster connections are expected to become an issue with the recently much discussed Internet of Things (IoT). A world where any device from cars to household appliances is interconnected with dozens of others will require networks with ever greater transfer capacities and speeds.
