Eight public holidays to fall on workdays in 2018
While this year's calendar, in which Christmas Eve falls on a Sunday, means a four-day weekend for many employees, Christmas Eve will fall on a Monday next year, meaning a five-day weekend for most.
Estonia has a total of twelve public holidays:
- New Year's Day — Jan. 1 (Monday)
- Independence Day — Feb. 24 (Saturday)
- Good Friday — March 30 (Friday)
- Easter Monday — April 1 (Sunday)
- May Day — May 1 (Tuesday)
- Pentecost — May 20 (Sunday)
- Victory Day — June 23 (Saturday)
- St. John's Day/Midsummer — June 24 (Sunday)
- Day of Restoration of Independence — Aug. 20 (Monday)
- Christmas Eve — Dec. 24 (Monday)
- Christmas Day — Dec. 25 (Tuesday)
- Boxing day — Dec. 26 (Wednesay)
This year, half of public holidays fell on workdays, with the other half falling on weekends. In 2018, seven public holidays will fall on workdays, while in 2019 and 2020 that number will increase to eight and nine, respectively.
While many employees are given public holidays off, those that must work are paid double for hours falling on a public holiday per Estonian employment law.
