Elron's 2017 passenger numbers exceed 7.3 million
State-owned train operator Eesti Liinirongid AS moved more than 7.3 million passengers last year, which is 8 percent more than in 2016. The company's ticket revenue increased by 9 percent to €13.2 million.
"The year 2017 was successful for Elron in every way, both the number of passengers as well as ticket revenue increased," Elron CEO Andrus Ossip said in a press release on Wednesday.
"The company's results exceeded the objectives set at the beginning of the year. We achieved a better result every month compared to previous years in terms of passenger numbers, and in the middle of December exceeded 7 million passengers. This is the first time in Elron's history that passenger numbers in one year reach such a high. Last summer was especially successful, as in three consecutive months, June, July, and August we managed to set a ticket revenue record," Ossip said.
The company moved 500,000 passengers more than it did in the previous year. According to Ossip, an express train to Narva was a successful addition as well. "The number of departures have increased fourfold on the Tallinn-Narva line compared to the time before the introduction of the new trains, and the number of passengers has shown an annual trend of growth. Looking at the number of passengers on the added express train to Narva, it can safely be said that the express has started out well, and it is clear to see that the demand for an express train is definitely there." Overall, the number of passengers on the Tallinn-Narva service had gone up by 77 percent year on year.
The most popular routes around Tallinn last year were the Tallinn-Paldiski route with 1.4 million passengers, the Tallinn-Riisipere route with 1 million passengers, and the Tallinn-Aegviidu route with 928,000 passengrs.
Of the long-distance routes, the most popular were the Tallinn-Tartu route with 960,000 passengers, the Tallinn-Viljandi route with 448,000 passengers, and the Tallinn-Narva route with 393,000 passengers. Altogether 20,000 journeys on average were made on Elron's trains every day.
