Barriers to be added to nearly all railway level crossings
Following Tuesday's collision of a tractor-trailer with a passenger train at the Kulna crossing outside of Keila, Estonian Railways (EVR) is planning on installing more barriers to level crossing throughout the country.
EVR has a total of 152 level crossings, 40 of which already have barriers installed, reported ETV news broadcast "Aktuaalne kaamera."
Following Tuesday's collision, EVR's board decided to propose to the supervisory council to install barriers at an additional 100 level crossings, including in sparsely populated areas with little traffic.
"We will propose to the next supervisory board to outfit all Category III railway level crossings with barriers as well, with the exception of the Valga-Koidula segment, where our speeds are limited to 25 kilometers per hour," said EVR board chairman Erik Laidvee.
At approximately 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, a tractor-trailer and an Elron passenger train collided at the Kulna crossing near Keila in Harju County. Nine people were transported to the hospital for treatment, including the 50-year-old engineer and 49-year-old truck driver.
The truck driver had been under the influence of alcohol, the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) later confirmed.
