Ferry traffic between Hiiumaa, mainland suspended again
For the second time this week, low sea levels have once again caused ferry traffic between the Western Estonian island of Hiiumaa and the mainland to be suspended.
On Thursday morning, ferry operator TS Laevad canceled its 6:30 a.m. departures from the Ports of Heltermaa and Rohuküla, ERR's television news reported. All advance bookings for all departures on the route have been canceled as well.
TS Laevad has asked travelers to be patient as well as to check for the latest information online at praamid.ee and on Facebook before heading to port.
Transaviabaltika, the airline serving connections between Tallinn and the capitals of Estonia's major western islands, will be adding extra flights to its schedule as ordered by Hiiumaa municipal government.
On Thursday and Friday, the additional flight will depart from Tallinn Airport at 3 p.m. and from Kärdla Airport at 3:45 p.m.
Sea levels causing logistical headaches
Ferry traffic on the Hiiumaa-mainland route was affected on Tuesday morning and suspended altogether by midday due to low sea levels.
On Wednesday, as sea levels rose, TS Laevad was able to operate some connections on a first-come, first-serve basis, until sea levels once again dropped too low to safely operate the ferries.
