Ferry service from Rohuküla to Hiiumaa to resume Friday
Ferry operator TS Laevad, a subsidiary of the Estonian state-owned Port of Tallinn, is expected to resume ferry service on the Rohuküla-Heltermaa route connecting the Estonian mainland to the western island of Hiiumaa on Friday.
According to a forecast by the Marine Systems Institute at Tallinn University of Technology (TTÜ), sea levels are expected to rise sufficiently over the course of Thursday to enable ferries to navigate the Rukki Channel without restrictions, TS Laevad spokespeople said on Wednesday.
Earlier on Thursday, ferry services to Hiiumaa will continue to be operated out of the Port of Virtsu on the mainland, which usually serves Saaremaa via the smaller island of Muhu. Departures from both Virtsu and Heltermaa are scheduled for 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., the ferry will head from Heltermaa to Rohuküla, and the last ferry from Virtsu to Heltermaa will depart at 7:30 p.m.
Beginning Friday, the two ferries will serve the Rohuküla-Heltermaa route according to the regular schedule, with the day's first ferries departing each port at 6:30 a.m.
Ferries to Hiiumaa, Estonia's second-largest island, began connecting to the mainland via the Port of Virtsu on March 2 after connections via the Port of Rohuküla were repeatedly suspended over the course of a few days due to low sea levels in the Rukki Channel.
