Minister: Northeast Estonia's development hindered by stagnant politicians
Minister of the Interior Andres Anvelt (SDE), who was on Saturday elected chair of the Social Democratic Party's Ida-Viru chapter, finds that the region's development is hindered by corrupt and stagnant politicians.
"In Narva and many other Ida-Viru County towns and municipalities, development is hindered by stagnant and unfortunately also corrupt authorities," Anvelt said. "Ida-Viru County has the potential to lead Estonia's development, but in order to achieve this, political will is needed. This will is what I want to offer to the people of Ida-Viru County."
According to Anvelt, the most important thing is to help Ida-Viru County equalize with the rest of Estonia socially and economically, but changes are necessary to achieve this. He noted for instance that unemployment in Northeastern Estonia is twice as high as the national average.
According to the minister, it is necessary for small businesses to begin operating in the region, but in order to encourage this, social security, good employment programs, stable political management, low corruption levels and strong public order are needed.
