Only about 5 percent of the 79,000 "old" domain names in Estonia have been re-registered under the new system, according to the Estonian Internet Foundation.

Owners of domain names registered before July 5, 2010 have until January 5, 2011 to re-register them or the names will be deleted. So far, only 4,000 have been re-registered.

"Registration of new domain names has started off well in the new system, but more passivity is seen with re-registering old domains," said chairman of the foundation's board, Marek-Andres Kauts. "We want to impress on all website proprietors to re-register their domains in a timely manner and not wait until end of the transition period."

Kauts said that data for domains registered since 1992 contain many inaccurate and out of date entries, and thus ample time should be reserved for the procedure.

While under the new system, anyone can register a new dot-ee domain, re-registration of existing company domains requires an application from an authorized representative of the specific company.
