Eino Tamberg, Long-Reigning Master of Modern Music, Dies
One of the country's most prominent neoclassical composers, Eino Tamberg, has died at 80.
Born in 1930 in Tallinn, Tamberg was known for the breadth of his oeuvre, including four symphonies, many concertos, three operas and a ballet, and characterized as a master of surprise.
He was a graduate of the Tallinn Conservatory, where he studied under Eugen Kapp, and worked as a sound director at Estonian Radio. he also taught composition at the conservatory, receiving full tenure in 1983. Students of Tamberg who have made a name for themselves include Raimo Kangro, Peeter Vähi, Margo Kõlar, Urmas Lattikas, Toivo Tulev, Mari Vihmand and Mart Siimer. Tamberg's best known works include the suite "Prince Gabriel", the ballet "The Boy and the Butterfly" and the opera "The Iron Home". His breakthrough work came in 1956 with the Concerto grosso.
