Kaljulaid meets with Angela Merkel during Germany visit
President Kersti Kaljulaid met with Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel on Tuesday during an official visit.
"Building up a digital society starts from a promising legal space, and legislative drafting requires the establishment of clear principles, which must be observed in the process of constructing a digital economy and e-governance," said President Kersti Kaljulaid in Berlin to Merkel.
"Naturally, the transition to digital services will bring along some risks, but the benefits of digitisation trump the crisis. Both the public and private sector of Estonia are happy to share their experiences and the technological solutions required to build up safe e-governance," added Kaljulaid.
The importance of digital identity and possible ways for its implementation in Germany were also discussed.
The leaders discussed the possible focus of the EU Presidency of Germany in the digital sphere. "The European Union could become an engine of digitisation, provided that we can take the required steps: for example, issue our citizens digital identification documents. Our legal space already offers us the required advantages," said Kaljulaid.
During the one-day working visit to Germany, Kaljulaid introduced senior officials of the German Health Care Ministry to Estonia's e-health application and discussed the possibilities for creating a trans-European open e-health care system that would meet different requirements and would be safe at the same time.
The President of the Republic also met with the President of Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble, to discuss the future of Europe – including defence cooperation, Brexit and funding of the next budget period of the European Union.
