2015 is the Year of Music in Estonia
Renowned Estonian composers Arvo Pärt and Veljo Tormis are celebrating their 80th and 85th birthdays respectively this year. Hence, 2015 has been declared a national Year of Music.
The year is dedicated to all music genres, and in addition to numerous concerts festivals, will include a special educational program. The year will end with a unique "Baby Symphony" project.
Perhaps the most noteworthy events featured in the Year of Music program are the staging of Arvo Pärt and Robert Wilson's "Adam's Lament", which will also be made available later in the year as a concert film and an accompanying documentary, and the 85th birthday celebrations of Veljo Tormis, with concerts all over Estonia.
The Year of Music organizers aim to bring more people closer to music.
Kristel Üksvärav, the project leader, said that she hopes that people will think more about how the music that surrounds them every day and that is consumed as if on autopilot, is created, and what kind of role it plays in people's lives.
One of the special projects of the year is a creation of the so-called "Baby Symphony", in which people can participate by uploading the recordings of their 2015-born children on a dedicated website.
A full calendar of the events is available here (in Estonia).
The Year of Music will also have its own weekly 5-minute TV program "Kõlab hästi!" (Sounds good!) in ETV on Sunday evenings at 22:00.
