Meeting with representatives of the Free Party on Saturday, current Estonian Minister of Foreign Affairs Marina Kaljurand stated that she would be ready to run for the presidency of Estonia if any MPs chose to nominate her for office in August.

“I consulted with people I hold in high esteem — my husband, my children, and good friends and acquaintances,” Kaljurand told ETV’s nightly news broadcast “Aktuaalne kaamera” regarding her decision.

The minister said that she would not have even considered running for president if it weren’t for her public support. “That was one reason why I began considering the possibility last fall, when the questions first started coming,” explained Kaljurand. “I get asked about it while traveling around Estonia, so I have been able to give everything a lot of thought, and now I am ready to say so as well.”

Kaljurand does not plan to do any dedicated campaigning, however. “My campaign is my work as foreign minister,” she stated. “I am currently the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia; I will continue my work, and try to do it as best I can.”

In addition to her current office, which she assumed in July 2015, Kaljurand has also been the ambassador to Israel (2004-2006), ambassador to the Russian Federation and Kazakhstan (2007-2011), ambassador to Canada (2011-2013) as well as to the United States and Mexico (2011-2014).

In order for the president to be elected within the Riigikogu, they must receive the support of 68 MPs.

The 2016 presidential election in Estonia is to take place on August 29 of this year.
