New Estonian president's approval rating at 73% (1)

Seventy-three percent of respondents in a survey conducted in mid-October said they support or rather support Kersti Kaljulaid as President of Estonia.

Among respondents who responded accordingly were 75.9 percent of women and 69.9 percent of men, according the survey conducted by Kantar Emor for BNS.

The new president's approval rating was at 80.7 percent among ethnic Estonians and 56.5 percent among respondents of other ethnic backgrounds.

Kaljulaid's approval rating varied somewhat by age group as well: among younger residents up to the age of 35, Estonia's new head of state had the support of 67.2 percent of respondents, while she was supported by 67.2 and 74.6 percent of respondents aged 35-50 and over 50 years of age, respectively.

Kantar Emor conducted in-home and online interviews regarding Estonia's new president with a total of 1,180 residents of Estonia ages 15-74 from Oct. 14-19.

The Riigikogu elected Kersti Kaljulaid, former Estonian representative in the European Court of Auditors, president on Oct. 3 after a full electoral cycle, including two rounds of voting and a runoff in the Riigikogu and one round plus a runoff in a 335-member electoral college, failed to elect a new head of state.

Kaljulaid, who did not run in the first electoral cycle, was the sole candidate when the elections returned to the 101-seat Riigikogu, where she won with 81 votes. She took the took the oath of office in the Riigikogu on Oct. 10, 2016, becoming the first woman president of Estonia.
