President Kaljulaid meets Mikhail Khodorkovsky
President Kersti Kaljulaid met with Mikhail Khodorkovsky at the annual conference of the Estonian Institute of Human Rights on Friday. Khodorkovsky is currently in Estonia for a conference of his Open Russia foundation.
Both President Kaljulaid and Khodorkovsky held a short speech at the institute’s conference. The Office of the President confirmed to ERR on Friday that they also met very briefly just before that.
Khodorkovsky has been in Tallinn since Wednesday on the occasion of the free press awards of his foundation.
Russian courts sentenced the former oil billionaire and CEO of Jukos to 14 years in prison in 2005 and 2010 for tax fraud, misappropriation of funds, and money laundry. Khodorkovsky was freed after Russian president Vladimir Putin granted him clemency on Dec. 20, 2013, which is also when he left the country.
