The Conservative People’s Party of Estonia’s (EKRE) Council, who recently convened in Järvakandi, found it was important that the party have its own candidate in Estonia’s presidential race this summer, and so it proposed that EKRE’s upcoming June 12 convention nominate party chairman Mart Helme as its presidential candidate.

According to ETV’s nightly news broadcast “Aktuaalne kaamera,” Helme stated that it was EKRE members and talks held across Estonia that encouraged the party to nominate a presidential candidate of their own.

“The Council has taken this information into consideration and will be submitting a proposal to the convention regarding our potential participation in the presidential elections,” said Helme.

According to EKRE’s homepage, their presidential candidate will be confirmed at the party’s June 12 conference in Pärnu, and a survey showed that it is Mart Helme specifically that party members and EKRE voters want to see in Estonia’s presidential elections.

“It turns out that support for my candidacy in the presidential race is quite considerable, thus evidently the proposal is being made to take part in the presidential elections,” added Helme. “The convention will thereafter most likely decide on the matter, and most likely favorably.”

While meeting in Järvakandi, the EKRE Council also adopted a declaration to restore the utilization of referendums in Estonia. According to the declaration, the Estonian public should have the right to initiate a bill or repeal a law upon the collection of 25,000 signatures of support.

EKRE is planning on participating with candidates of its own on the ballots in as many local governments as possible in Estonia’s next local elections.
