Raimond Danilov, who is his municipality’s representative in the electoral college on Sept. 24, was asked to leave his party after making public that he intended to support Marina Kaljurand rather than his own party’s candidate, EKRE chairman Mart Helme.

As daily Eesti Päevaleht reported on Tuesday, Danilov received a phone call from Mart Helme’s wife, Helle-Moonika Helme, who wanted him to nominate her husband for the upcoming presidential election on Sept. 24.

“She asked why I wouldn’t give me vote to Mart Helme. And then she told me to get lost, as this would be best for everybody. After that phone call, I made the final decision to give my signature to nominate Marina,” Danilov told the paper.

In the assessment of Helle-Moonika Helme, who is a member of the leadership of EKRE’s Lääne County section, her young party colleague has conducted himself dishonestly and betrayed his party.

According to her, Danilov had said earlier that he supported Mart Helme, and would nominate him, but that once made an elector, he had suddenly changed his mind.

Danilov will represent the municipality of Martna in Lääne County. According to the chairwoman of the local council, Ene Pallas, the council deliberated who to support in the electoral college — and that among all the members, Marina Kaljurand had found support.

Raimond Danilov, himself still a student, entered EKRE in 2013 after the party was founded. He followed a colleague on the municipality’s council after that colleague resigned in May this year, and was chosen Martna’s elector with four votes in favor on Thursday last week.
