President Kaljulaid: Russia’s unpredictable behavior can’t be ignored
President Kersti Kaljulaid said in an interview with Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat that Russia’s unpredictable behavior could not be ignored, but that she was not planning to suggest to Finland to join NATO either.
“The Estonian president honors the judgement of the Finnish people how to arrange their own international defense cooperation. Naturally, Estonia as a member of NATO is pleased with the way Finland and Sweden are working together with NATO,” Kaljulaid said in the interview.
Kaljulaid remarked that defense cooperation couldn’t have a better basis than the respect for each other’s decisions.
As far as Russia is concerned, Kaljulaid’s point of view is that its unpredictable behavior can’t be ignored, and that for this reason Estonia will continue to shape its relations with Russia in accordance with European Union policy.
“We are very satisfied that the European Union has been united in its relations with an aggressive Russia,” Kaljurand said.
