Kaljurand has support of 40% of Estonian voters across parties
In a survey conducted by TNS Emor for daily Postimees last week, 40% of Estonians said they would like to see Marina Kaljurand become president. Support for the Reform Party’s official candidate, Siim Kallas, meanwhile shrank to 18%.
More than half of Social Democratic voters support Kaljurand, according to the survey. The former minister of foreign affairs has supporters among the voters of other parties as well, including the Center Party, IRL, and the Free Party.
With 46% support, Kallas is the most popular candidate with Reform Party voters, followed by Marina Kaljurand with 37%.
In the assessment of TNS Emor’s Ainar Voog, who ran the survey, support for for other candidates and potential candidates is “marginal”. Mailis Reps (Center), Eiki Nestor (SDE), Allar Jõks (Free Party and IRL), and Mart Helme (EKRE) didn’t make it beyond 8%.
Voog explains Kaljurand’s popularity with voters with her status as an independent and protest candidate. “She is straightforward, understandable, and contrasts Ilves”, Voog said, adding that the expectation in the Estonian society was on the rise that higher office should also be held by women.
