Airlines free to plan flight routes in Estonia starting November
On November 12, six Northern European countries, Estonia among them, will implement Free Route Airspace, meaning that planes will be able to take the shortest or optimal route and so reduce fuel consumption, flying time and CO2 emissions.
The Free Route Airspace will extend over Estonia, Latvia, Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark.
With airlines and business operators no longer restricted to pre-defined "routes" in these six airspaces, an estimated total of 22.4 flight hours, 15,454 kilometers and over 50 tons of fuel will be saved each day. This will cut CO2 emissions by 166,897 kilos.
The Free Route Airspace should extend across the whole of Northern Europe by 2020.
