Storm Damage: 65,000 Households Without Power
High winds that hit Estonia on Thursday night left no county untouched, knocking out power to an estimated 65,000 households, with experts saying that figure can increase as not all clients have reported powercuts yet.
Northern and central areas were the hardest hit, while the main islands and south eastern Estonia survived with only minor damage.
Rescue workers received over 350 calls, mostly about fallen trees. The roof of a four-story apartment building in central Estonia was blown away, damaging a number of vehicles. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Taivo Tõnne, the head of the control center for Estonia's electricity grid operator Elektrilevi, told ERR radio today that the damage is extensive and the weekend will be a busy one for repair crews. He said it is currently difficult to predict when all the lines will be operational again, but some households could be without power for up to a week.
The storm, which brought winds of 115 kilometers per hour, is currently weakening and will soon be replaced by cooler weather, according to forecasts.
