Estonia's Dominance in Fencing Continues With Juniors World Championship Gold
Katrina Lehis beat Hungarian Reka Bohus at the World Juniors Fencing Championship in Bulgaria on Tuesday to claim the epée gold medal, following a successful 2013 when Estonia won both the men's and the women's world titles.
The 19-year-old from Haapsalu, Estonia's fencing hotspot, had to fight hard for the title, beginning the last period of the final two points behind before coming back for a 15-14 win.
Lehis beat Italian Roberta Marzani, who was ranked first in the world, 12-11 in the semifinals and Amanda Sirico from USA 12-11 in the quarterfinals, including a 4-0 comeback against the American in the last 90 seconds.
Nikolai Novosjolov won the men's individual epée tournament at the World Fencing Championships, while Julia Beljajeva won the women's event, with both finals taking place in a 30-minute period in August.
