IRL leadership meets at Toompea to discuss upcoming great council
The leadership of the Pro Patria and Res Publica Union (IRL) convened at Toompea Castle on Monday afternoon to discuss the party's great council, which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, May 6.
Party chairman and Minister of Defence Margus Tsahkna announced two weeks ago that he would propose convening an extraordinary great council in order to make changes to the party's statutes. Asked about electing a new chairman, he told ERR prior to the meeting that the party must first confirm changes to its statutes and then continue from there.
IRL deputy chairman Siim Kiisler promised to propose at Monday's meeting electing a new chairman and other governing bodies at the great council as well.
Kiisler said prior to the meeting that every organization leader must first look themselves in the eye, not criticize others. "They must be a leader, regardless of what institution is in question," he said. "And if they feel that that is not what they are, then they must consider whether there is reason to continue."
The deputy chairman noted that he had supported Tsahkna as chairman two years ago and the latter has had enough time to show deeds. "Now is the perfect time to hold elections and ask the party for an honest evaluation," he said.
According to Kiisler, Tsahkna may say that he has not been afforded the opportunity to do anything, but in that case it was a matter of weak leadership. "Especially two years after being elected," he concluded. "That is seeking excuses and hanging onto his seat."
