President of the Riigikogu Eiki Nestor (SDE) is on a visit of the People's Republic of China this week together with his colleagues from the Nordic and Baltic parliaments. They will meet with the President of China to discuss possibilities for cooperation between the countries.
The speakers of the parliaments of the Baltic and Nordic countries have been on such visits before, namely to the United States, to Ukraine, and Georgia, the Riigikogu's press office reported on Monday.
On their visit to China, the speakers of the parliaments of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, Sweden, Norway, and Iceland will meet with President of the People’s Republic of China, Xi Jinping. Meetings are also planned with young Chinese entrepreneurs to discuss innovation in the countries' economies.
Though so far economic relations between China and Estonia had been "modest", he does see potential to develop trade relations, transit cooperation, and also foreign investment, Nestor said.
The development of tourism and attracting a higher number of visitors from China is also a business opportunity. Nestor expressed hope that along with the Nordic and the other Baltic countries, tourism could be developed, also considering that Estonia was celebrating its centennial this year.
The speakers will visit the Forbidden City in Beijing, and the Great Wall of China. Nestor is expected back in Estonia on Thursday.
