3.5 million tourists accommodated in Estonia in 2017

According to information released by Statistics Estonia on Tuesday, a total of 3.5 million tourists, including 2.15 million foreign tourists, stayed at Estonia's accommodation establishments in 2017, up seven percent from 2016 numbers.

In 2017, 1.39 million domestic tourists and 2.15 million foreign tourists used the services of accommodation establishments in Estonia, marking an increase of nine and five percent, respectively, over 2016 figures.

Compared to the previous year, tourist numbers from most EU countries increased, and numbers from Russia and Asian countries were up as well. The number of Finnish tourists, meanwhile, which accounted for 42 percent of the total number of foreign tourists staying at Estonia's accommodation establishments, decreased by four percent compared to 2016.

72 percent of foreign tourists who stayed at accommodation establishments were on vacation, while 21 percent were traveling for business and the rest had some other reason for visiting Estonia. 64 percent of domestic tourists were on vacation, while 23 percent were traveling for business.

In December 2017, 270,000 domestic and foreign tourists stayed at Estonia's accommodation establishments, up six percent on year. This total included 157,000 foreign tourists, up four percent on year.

73 percent of foreign tourists to stay in Estonia in December arrived from EU countries, with another 17 percent coming from Russia and three percent from Asian countries. Tourist numbers from EU countries remained at the same level as the previous year, while tourist numbers from Russia were up 15 percent and Asian countries ten percent on year.

124,000 foreign tourists, or 79 percent of those to use accommodation services in Estonia, stayed at the accommodation establishments of Tallinn. 71 percent of foreign tourists were on vacation and 22 percent were traveling for business, while the rest had some other reason for visiting Estonia. Up nine percent on year, 113,000 domestic tourists also used the services of accommodation establishments last December.

In December 2017, 966 accommodation establishments offered their services, including 20,000 rooms and 45,000 bed places which saw an occupancy rate of 41 and 34 percent, respectively. As in December 2016, the average cost of a guest night in Estonia that month was €37.
