According to information released by Statistics Estonia on Wednesday, a total of 206,000 domestic and foreign tourists stayed at accommodation establishments in Estonia in January, up seven percent on year.
Compared to January 2017, the number of foreign tourists to utilize the services of accommodation establishments increased 12 percent. 118,000 foreign tourists accounted for 58 percent of the total number of tourists this January.
33 percent of the accommodated foreign tourists came from Finland, 31 percent from Russia and eight percent from Latvia. Compared to January 2017, the number of tourists arriving from Russia increased by one fifth, while the number of tourists arriving from Finland, Latvia, Sweden and the U.K. likewise saw an increase. There were fewer tourists, meanwhile, from Norway and Germany than in January 2017. Of the accommodated foreign tourists, 68 percent traveled to Estonia on vacation, 24 percent for business and the rest had some other reason for visiting the country. Three quarters of foreign tourists preferred the accommodation establishments of Tallinn.
In January 2018, a total of 87,000 domestic tourists utilized the services of accommodation establishments, up two percent on year. Of these, 63 percent were on vacation and 24 percent traveling for business. 28 percent of the domestic tourists to use accommodation services stayed in the accommodation establishments of Harju County, 16 percent in Pärnu County, 15 percent in Tartu County and ten percent in Ida-Viru County.
In January 2018, 962 accommodation establishments offered services for tourists. 20,000 rooms and 46,000 bed places were available for tourists. 35 percent of the rooms and 28 percent of the bed places were occupied. The average cost of a guest night was €37, up €1 on year. The average cost of a guest night was €43 in Harju County, €34 in Tartu County, €27 in Pärnu County and €34 in Ida-Viru County.
